Club History
The idea of a bowling club in Brunswick was first raised in 1938 by local community members, including Ray Clarke, Bill Rose, Archie Bert and Colin Campbell (Snr). Several sites were considered, but with the outbreak of war in 1939, plans were put on hold.
In the 1940s, renewed interest came from Don Campbell, who proposed land overlooking the Brunswick River as a suitable location. Again, progress stalled, but the vision for a community club remained strong.
By the early 1950s, locals were eager to see the project move forward. After years of discussion, a public meeting was held in 1954, chaired by Jack Lowe of the Harvey Road Board. It was here that the Brunswick Bowling Club was officially formed. Don Campbell was elected Chairman, George Wilson became Secretary, and Ray Clarke was appointed the club’s first Patron.
The chosen site beside the Brunswick River was approved, and construction began almost immediately. Much of the early work, including the first clubhouse and ‘A’ green, was completed by volunteers using donated materials. Seventy members contributed £5 each, and a £1,250 loan from the Harvey Road Board helped bring the project to life.
The club’s first green was completed in 1958, and on 2 November that year the clubhouse was officially opened. The opening followed an earlier exhibition match in 1957, when Brunswick hosted international teams for a highly successful pairs event.
Over the decades, the club has continued to grow. Additional greens were developed, the clubhouse was extended several times, and facilities were expanded to include a bar, kitchen, indoor bowls, carpets and a paid greenkeeper.
Today, the Brunswick District Bowling Club remains a proud community hub overlooking the river, built on volunteer spirit, local support and a long tradition of bowls in the district.
